mmediately thereafter, northbound U.S. 101/Hollywood Freeway reaches Exit 12B, Ventura Boulevard. At one time, Ventura Boulevard was Business U.S. 101, but no signage remains on the freeway for this designation. The business route is not signed along Ventura Boulevard either (maps showed the business route as active until the mid-1990s). The next exit is for Vineland Avenue (Exit 12C) and for U.S. 101 to split from the Hollywood Freeway and to turn due west along the Ventura Freeway (Exit 13). Northbound California 170 continues as the Hollywood Freeway. There is no direct access to eastbound California 134/Ventura Freeway - one must use Vineland Avenue. Photo taken 12/23/04. |

At Exit 13, U.S. 101 splits from the Hollywood Freeway and transitions onto the Ventura Freeway westbound. The left lanes transition onto California 170 north on the Hollywood Freeway toward Interstate 5. A high occupancy vehicle (HOV) lane begins at this point for California 170. Photos taken 06/28/06 and 12/23/04. |

U.S. 101 north
This brief transition ramp carries northbound U.S. 101 from the Hollywood Freeway onto the Ventura Freeway. From here, northbound U.S. 101 will travel due west toward the cities of Ventura and Santa Barbara. This general direction does not resume northbound until Gaviota, which is west of Santa Barbara. However, U.S. 101 is signed north-south despite traveling east-west between this interchange and Gaviota. Photo taken 12/23/01. |

U.S. Highway 101 - Los Angeles County (#2) (Northbound)
U.S. 101/Ventura Freeway north - California 170 to Ventura County Line
The next exit along northbound U.S. 101/Ventura Freeway is Exit 14, Laurel Canyon Road to Studio City. U.S. 101 is now in the San Fernando Valley, which has attempted to secede from the city of Los Angeles earlier this decade. For now, San Fernando Valley will remain part of the city of Los Angeles. Passing through the San Fernando Valley, this section of U.S. 101/Ventura Freeway carries five westbound lanes. While signed as U.S. 101 north, traffic reporters and locals refer to the Ventura Freeway as an east-west route. Eastbound Ventura Freeway is signed as U.S. 101 south, and westbound Ventura Freeway is signed as U.S. 101 north. (There are a few signs erected by the city of Los Angeles and other agencies aside from Caltrans that indicate U.S. 101 east and west, but most refer to north and south.) Photo taken 04/30/06. |

Northbound (westbound) U.S. 101/Ventura Freeway reaches Exit 14, Laurel Canyon Road to Studio City. A community of Los Angeles, Studio City is part of the San Fernando Valley and is roughly bordered by U.S. 101/Ventura Freeway to the north, Mulholland Drive and the Santa Monica Mountains to the south, U.S. 101/Hollywood Freeway to the east, and Ethel Avenue to the west. Former Business U.S. 101/Ventura Boulevard serves the business district of Studio City, which was named in the 1920s for Mack Sennett Studios, which today are known as CBS Radford Studios. Photo taken 12/23/04. |
