This mileage sign provides the distance to the next four exits along U.S. 101/Santa Ana Freeway north: Exit 1C, Cesar Chavez Avenue; Exit 1D, Junction Spur I-10 (California 10) east to Interstate 10/San Bernardino Freeway east to San Bernardino and Phoenix; Exit 2A, Vignes Street; and Exit 2B, Alameda Street. Photo taken 11/08/08.

Northbound U.S. 101/Santa Ana Freeway reaches Exit 1C, Cesar Chavez Avenue (formerly known as Macy Street west of the Los Angeles River and Brooklyn Avenue east of the Los Angeles River). This exit does not actually directly connect with Cesar Chavez Avenue; motorists must take a connector route to reach east-west Cesar Chavez Avenue. This city street is one of several roads named posthumously for famed farm labor leader Cesar E. Chavez in California; others include Cesar E. Chavez Parkway (former Crosby Street) in the San Diego and Cesar Chavez Street (former Army Street) in San Francisco. March 31st is celebrated as a holiday for some public offices in the state of California in honor of Cesar E. Chavez's birthday. Photos taken 11/08/08 and 12/23/01.

The exit ramp to Exit 1C, Cesar Chavez Avenue is partially located on the exit-only offramp to Exit 1D, Junction Spur I-10 (California 10) east to Interstate 10/San Bernardino Freeway. Only the left two lanes continue north on U.S. 101 to downtown Los Angeles. With limited sight distance, watch for slow or stopped traffic due to the upcoming merge with California 10/San Bernardino Freeway (Spur I-10) westbound traffic. Photo taken 11/08/08.

Immediately thereafter, northbound U.S. 101/Santa Ana Freeway reaches Exit 1D, Junction Spur I-10 to Interstate 10/San Bernardino Freeway east. Originally, this tiny connector between U.S. 101 and eastbound Interstate 10 was part of an early definition of Interstate 110, and at the same time, the section of U.S. 101 between Interstate 5 and this connector was Interstate 105. Today, neither segment is an Interstate: the connector is part of California 10 (also called Spur I-10 per the Caltrans District 7 Bridge Log), and Interstate 105 is now just U.S. 101. Of course, both Interstate 105 and Interstate 110 have been used on other freeways in Los Angeles (see map above for more detail). Photo taken 11/08/08.

After the split with Spur I-10, the remaining two lanes of U.S. 101 north narrow, and there is no shoulder. Ahead, U.S. 101 north will merge with traffic from westbound Spur I-10. The next exit along northbound U.S. 101/Santa Ana Freeway is Exit 2A, Vignes Street to the Patsaouras Transit Plaza. Photo taken 11/08/08.

U.S. 101 passes through a brief tunnel to pass under the Spur I-10 eastbound lanes and to merge with Spur I-10 west. Believe this: the tunnel requires reduced speeds, so slow down! Photos taken 11/08/08.

Emerging from the short tunnel, traffic joins from the right (incoming from Interstate 10/San Bernardino Freeway westbound). The freeway rapidly expands from two to four northbound lanes. Note that the lane markings do not match the pavement lines, so be careful to stay in your lane. Adjacent to the freeway is the western end of the San Bernardino Freeway busway, which allows high occupancy vehicles and buses a direct route into downtown from the east. The busway does not connect to U.S. 101 and ends at its intersection with Alameda Street near Union Station. Photo taken 11/08/08.

This mileage sign provides the distance to the next three exits along U.S. 101/Santa Ana Freeway north: Exit 2A, Vignes Street; Exit 2B, Alameda Street; Exit 2C, Spring Street. The fourth offramp will be Exit 3, Junction Interstate 110/Harbor Freeway south and California 110/Pasadena Freeway north (to Historic U.S. 66/Arroyo Seco Parkway northeast). Photo taken 11/08/08.

U.S. 101/Santa Ana Freeway again turns west upon joining with the San Bernardino Freeway and crosses the Los Angeles River. Around downtown, the river can be identified by following the high-voltage power lines and railroad tracks that parallel the beleagured river. These particular power lines are owned by the City of Los Angeles Department of Water and Power. The skyline of downtown Los Angeles is again in view, and prominent landmarks such as the Library Tower (U.S. Bank Tower) and Los Angeles City Hall become visible. Photos taken 11/08/08.

Northbound U.S. 101/Santa Ana Freeway reaches Exit 2A, Vignes Street. The next exit along northbound U.S. 101 is Exit 2B, Alameda Street to Union Station. Note the control city for northbound U.S. 101 is now "Hollywood," even though Hollywood is technically part of the city of Los Angeles. Photo taken 11/08/08.

The next exit along U.S. 101/Santa Ana Freeway north is Exit 2B, Alameda Street to Union Station. Use Exit 2B to Olvera Street and Little Tokyo. Coming back to grade from the Los Angeles River bridge, U.S. 101 enters the notorious Downtown Slot. Watch for traffic congestion and slowing through this busy stretch of freeway. Photo taken 11/08/08.

Use Exit 2B to the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles (MOCA) (founded in 1979), the Geffen Contemporary at MOCA (formerly the Temporary Contemporary, which opened in 1983), and the Walt Disney Concert Hall (home of the Los Angeles Philharmonic Orchestra; opened on October 23, 2003). The Los Angeles Civic Center and El Pueblo de Los Angeles State Historic Park are also located adjacent to U.S. 101 (found on the south side and north side of the freeway, respectively). The Gold Line light rail extension crosses U.S. 101 at this point; construction has been underway for several years and is expected to open in July 2009. The Metro Gold Line connects eastern Los Angeles with Pasadena; the extension would connect East Los Angeles via Little Tokyo and Boyle Heights. A separate Gold Line extension is planned from Pasadena east to Montclair by 2014 and possibly to Ontario International Airport at some later time. Photo taken 11/08/08.

The gore point for Exit 2B to Alameda Street is posted shortly thereafter (this exit gore point sign now includes the exit number as of 2008, and this photo was taken before the Gold Line bridge was completed across the freeway). Note the lack of shoulders along this section of U.S. 101. The freeway goes below grade to enter the Downtown Slot. Photo taken 11/25/04.

A postmile marker for U.S. 101 for 0.80 mile is located next to a Santa Ana Freeway Downtown Slot date stamp of 1953. Date stamps etched into concrete and printed date stamps were much more common during this earlier period of highway construction, and it demonstrates the durability of this very busy road: It has remained in service as-is for over 50 years from the date of this picture. Photo taken 11/13/05.

The right lane connects to Exit 3, Junction Interstate 110/Harbor Freeway south and Junction California 110/Pasadena Freeway (Old U.S. 66/Arroyo Seco Parkway) north. This major freeway travels south through downtown Los Angeles toward the Port of Los Angeles and San Pedro. To the northeast, California 110 follows the historic Arroyo Seco Parkway corridor to Pasadena. Note the postmile marker and date stamp at the base of the bridge; a close-up is shown next. Photo taken 11/08/08.

The aforementioned date stamp (for 1949) is etched into the concrete at the base of the Los Angeles Street overpass below the California 110 advance sign. Photo taken 11/13/05.
